African women in rural areas are esteemed for both their productive and reproductive contributions to society. Most women take the responsibility of providing food for their families through subsistence agriculture. Women are farmers and women are mothers! In both roles of responsibility, they enjoy the gratifications and burdens of nurturing a seed from conception to maturation, and are thus the instruments and guardians of fertility.
A woman, mother and farmer, is seen here with a baby on her back on her way to the farm. She is carrying a basket of food in one hand, and a hoe (used for tilling) in another.
The original oil painting on canvas is gorgeously framed, museum-style!!
