Description
The roles of pharmacists in every corner of the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic are sometimes overlooked. The abstract oil painting and collage depicts the molecular structure of a popular antiviral agent, remdesivir and the role of the pharmacist as a center stage in its preparation prior to infusion. Pharmacists play major roles in COVID-19 testing, including the preparation and administration of the COVID-19 vaccines (also depicted in the painting).
Hospital and health-system pharmacists have played a huge role in the preparation and monitoring of intravenous monoclonal anti-bodies (REGN-COV2, bamlanivimab, etc.)
and antiviral agents (like remdesivir) following clinical guidelines.
From my experience as a hospital staff/clinical pharmacist, remdesivir has been one of the most dispensed medications in its class at my institution(s). It’s a synthesized broad-spectrum intravenous antiviral and the first agent approved by the FDA as possible option for the treatment of coronavirus disease symptoms in hospitalized patients. Remdesivir works by preventing viral replication. Anyway, while some studies have shown no mortality benefit with the use of remdesivir, others have shown a reduction in time to clinical improvement. The pharmacist continues to be a major player in its use and other COVID-19 treatments.
